Digital health technologies in cardiovascular medicine: success stories and opportunities

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death in Australia and is placing growing pressure on our health system as the population ages.

 

This panel will take a high-level look at how digital health technologies are reshaping the way we prevent, diagnose, and manage cardiovascular conditions.

Meet the panellists

Associate Professor Vijay Rajagopal
Department of Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and IT; Theme Lead, Digital Health & Simulation Technologies (Graeme Clark Institute); Associate Investigator, ARC CoE – MACSYS; Group Lead, Cell Systems & Mechanobiology.

An expert in computational physiology, Vijay creates anatomically and physiologically realistic computational models of biological systems (sometimes called digital twins). He uses these models to test scientific hypotheses about how biological systems work and applies them in clinical and pharmaceutical applications for translational impact. A fundamental focus of Dr. Rajagopal's group is about developing models to uncover how living cells work.

Vickie Edwards
Director of Sales & Operations, Hydrix

Vickie has more than 25 years of health technology industry expertise. She brings cardiothoracic clinical experience and a deep commercial capability and understanding of how to successfully bring new interventional cardiac devices to market. Her broad capabilities across sales, marketing, field operations, patient care and regulatory affairs further strengthen our senior leadership as we progress towards launch of a portfolio of cardiac products and technologies, initially in Asia-Pacific markets.

Professor Peter Barlis
Honorary Professorial Fellow, Melbourne Medical School
Interventional Cardiologist, St Vincent’s Hospital

After graduating from the University of Melbourne, Professor Peter Barlis trained at Austin Health, completed a Master of Public Health at Monash University, and undertook a fellowship at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, followed by a PhD at Erasmus University, Netherlands, on optical coherence tomography (OCT) in cardiology. He led OCT adoption across over 60 centres in Australia and New Zealand and is internationally known for his work in interventional cardiology, advanced coronary imaging, and novel cardiovascular therapies.

A Fellow of multiple international cardiology societies, Prof Barlis has authored three textbooks, ten book chapters, and over 130 peer-reviewed papers. He leads a biomedical engineering research group developing new imaging and cardiac devices, including 3D printing, and serves on several editorial boards.

Associate Professor Lachlan Miles

Head of Research | Department of Anaesthesia | Austin Health

Associate Professor Lachlan Miles is a Staff Specialist and Head of Research in the Department of Anaesthesia at Austin Health, an Honorary Principal Fellow of the Department of Critical Care at the University of Melbourne and an Honorary Principal Research Fellow and Perioperative Clinical Lead in the Preclinical Critical Care Unit of The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. His subspecialty clinical practice involves cardiothoracic and major hepatobiliary anaesthesia (including liver transplant) and peri-operative medicine.
